It Takes a Community to Ensure Inclusion, Tolerance, Adaptation and Collaboration

#ITAC (It Takes A Community) is a global, multi-stakeholder social media communications campaign that aims to promote a balanced and evidence-based public narrative on migration, initiated by the Global Forum on Migration and Development’s (GFMD) Ad Hoc Working Group on Public Narratives on Migration.

The working group is co-chaired by the Government of Canada, the Government of Ecuador and the GFMD Mayors Mechanism, and brings together national governments, cities, businesses, civil society and international organizations who are working to promote a balanced and evidence-based public narrative on migration, recognizing the broader impact this narrative can have on social cohesion, support for diversity, economic growth and innovation. For the full list of members, please consult the GFMD website.

The first phase of the campaign started in 2020 and included specific activities around International Migrants Day in 2020 and 2021, as well as dedicated stakeholder take-overs organized by the different GFMD Mechanisms and youth.

The take-overs leveraged a broad range of platforms and content types, with activities including live-streamed chats, a photo series featuring impactful quotes, and various social media “challenges.” They highlighted diverse perspectives about the benefits of migration and the importance of fostering a balanced narrative.

The second phase of the campaign took place will start in 2023 and will expanded ITAC’s capacity to promote balanced narratives on migrants and refugees through virtual dialogues with migration and protection experts, public live chats on social media platforms, and partnerships with influencers. The campaign will be took on both a global and regional in scopefocus, with a particular focus on Central and South America.

To watch the virtual dialogues with experts and public live chats, please consult the Events page.
